Enrichment Summer Program Music Classes

Beginning Music 

Music Together: Period 3&4 Enrichment Day (Grades k - 3rd) Session A only

In this Music Together class, children will experience music in a variety of forms. Children will be singing, dancing and exploring different musical instruments on a daily basis. Music Together is an internationally recognized program that has been created for children to be introduced and exposed to music in creative and fun ways. The goal of this class is to help children gain basic music competence, being able to sing on pitch and find rhythm with their bodies.

 

Beginning Flute: Period 1 Enrichment Day (Grades 4 - 5th)

Learn to play the flute. This class will teach aspiring musicians how to assemble and care for the flute, produce a beautiful sound, read music, and begin playing familiar melodies. A limited number of instruments are available to borrow. Students will give a short performance at the end-of-camp concert. Prerequisites: No experience required.

 

Beginning Trumpet: Period 2 Enrichment Day (Grades 4 - 5th)

Learn to play the trumpet! This class will teach aspiring musicians how to assemble and care for the trumpet, produce a beautiful sound, read music, and begin playing familiar melodies. A limited number of instruments are available to borrow. Students will give a short performance at the end-of-camp concert. Prerequisites: No experience required.

 

Beginning Clarinet: Period 3 Enrichment Day (Grades 4 - 5th)

Learn to play the clarinet. This class will teach aspiring musicians how to assemble and care for the flute, produce a beautiful sound, read music, and begin playing familiar melodies. A limited number of instruments are available to borrow. Students will give a short performance at the end-of-camp concert. Prerequisites: No experience required.

 

Recorder: Period 1 Enrichment Day  (Grades 3 - 5th) Session A only

Learn how to read and play music! Students will learn to play familiar melodies on the Soprano recorder and will be introduced to basic music notation. Music will be provided. There will be daily instrument demonstrations to allow students to see opportunities available to them in school music programs. An additional $5 lab fee will be required to purchase a Soprano Recorder with Baroque Fingerings. Students will give a short performance at the end-of-camp concert.

 

Chorus: Period 4 Enrichment Day (Grade 3 - 5th) Session B Only

This class will help students develop their singing voice and explore their vocal abilities. Students will learn basic singing posture, breath control, diction, phrasing, tone color, and read basic music notation. Students will also sing a wide variety of songs that include folk songs, patriotic songs and songs from different cultures. 

Continuing Music 

Advanced Jazz Band Add-on 1:00 - 2:30 pm  (Grades 6-9th) Session A & B

Have you been in regular band 2-3 years and want to learn a new style? Sign up for the MEF Jazz Band and continue music making in a different style that the traditional class band. Specifically, this class will need trumpets, trombones, saxophones, drum set, bass or string bass and a keyboard player. If you play another instrument, we can make parts for you to be able to participate as well. This ensemble will cover basic blues, basic improvising, and the playing of 1-2 jazz charts at the end of each camp session.

 

Advance Ensemble Add-On 1:00 - 2:30 pm  (Grades 6-9th) Session A only

A course designed to allow students to learn about the jazz style and repertoire through performance in a big band setting. Students will be given the opportunity to learn and play an improvised solo. This class is meant for students who already have 2 years' experience on their primary instrument.  No prior jazz experience is necessary. 

 

Concert Band: Period 3  Enrichment Day (Grades 5-9th)

Continue your school year music playing by playing in the summer MEF band. Open to traditional wind band instruments and percussion with at least 1 year of band class experience (though a 2-year minimum is more preferred). The ensemble will work on sound development, music fundamentals, and perform 1-2 pieces at the end of each 2-week session. Really enhance your skills by signing up for both sessions. When signing up, please indicate what band instrument you play.

 

Orchestra: Period 4 Enrichment Day (Grades 5-9th)

Continue your school year music playing by playing in the summer MEF orchestra. Open to traditional string orchestra instruments with at least 1 year of orchestra class experience (though a 2-year minimum is more preferred). The ensemble will work on sound development, music fundamentals, and perform 1-2 pieces at the end of each 2-week session. Really enhance your skills by signing up for both sessions. When signing up, please indicate what orchestra instrument you play.
