Grant Description: Fund one instrumental music teacher
Success Indicators: Continuation of the instrumental music program for grades 4-8 throughout the Moreland School District.  This ncludes: 
* Recorder Program for all district 4th graders
* 5th grade district Honor Band
* EDS Middle School Band
* EDS Middle School Orchestra
* MMS Bands
* MMS Orchestras

Discovery in Education
Funds Requested: $9,420.00

Grant Description: Access to video and sound clips to use in instruction through United Streaming. Teachers use the clips and videos to enhance instruction and learning for students, helping the issues to 'come alive' for kids in the classroom setting.
Success Indicators: The video and sound clips used in instruction are very effective in engaging students in discussion, allowing students to listen to or watch authors read or discuss their literary works, providing them with background information on historical events, and allowing them to view 2 sides of a controversial or historical issue as presented through documentary footage or structured interviews.

Silicon Valley Math Institute
Funds Requested: $5,000.00

Students Benefitted: All 4,000 K-8 Moreland School District Students
Grant Description: Membership in the Silicon Valley Math Institute which provides ongoing staff development and leadership activities for Math teachers and site administrators in the district. The district provides funding for teacher release and substitute costs, for materials and supplies, an annual week-long Math coaching seminar during July, and stipends for teachers involved in SVMI activities. The $5,000 membership cost entitles us to participate in theses activities and to receive advisory assistance from Math professionals throughout the State.
Success Indicators: Moreland is dedicated to improving student performance and achievement in mathmatics. Our work with SVMI is critical to improving teachers knowledge and training in Math and will result in improved instruction and achievement in our students.

Moving Forward in Math
Funds Requested: $5,000.00

Grant Description: Anderson has purchased an eight week math assessment, a new math program, BoardMath, and will continue to use supplemental/intervention computer program from Mind Institute. The classroms all need hands-on math materials for students. To truly understand grade level standards students need to use numerous manipulatives to grasp and master patterns, multiplications, division, fractions, geometry, etc.
Success Indicators: We believe that our math results on the 2008-2009 STAR exam will increase by at least 20% if teachers consistently utilize these hands-on materials during their regular math periods, their flex schedules and during our afternoon intervention programs.

Jazz Band
Funds Requested: $4,942.00

Grant Description: Stipend for music teacher for before school jazz band class                                                                         * NOTE:  The Jazz Band stipend of $3386 funded by MiM/MEF in the 2007-08 school year was not used and therefore is being credited to the Jazz Band stipend for the 2008-09 school year.  Together with the $1556.00, this comes to a total of $4942 stipend for the 2008-09 school year.
Success Indicators: The Moreland Middle School Jazz Band will:                       
* Meet for classes two times/week and                          
* Perform a minimum of three (3) performances during the 2008-09 school year

Reniassance Faire
Funds Requested: $3,800.00

Students Benefitted: 7th Grade students at MMS and EDS
Grant Description: Funding for the Knights of Avalon. A group that will demonstrate the skills and equipment neccesary for Knights during the Renaissance era. This is a very important part of the Annual Renaissance Faire held in the Moreland Woods for our 7th Graders. Students have raised the needed funds for all other activities that make up this unparalleled living history event.
Success Indicators: All 7th graders will learn about the everyday life of the people of the Renaissance era in a way that will stay in their memory more than any classroom lesson could.

MMS Bird watching Club
Funds Requested: $1,200.00

Date Grant to Take Effect: 8-Sep

Students Benefitted: Any students at MMS who choose to participate
Grant Description: Seed money to purchase binoculars, field guides, bird feeders, and seed to begin feeder watch program on the MMS campus and to facilitate bird watching trips.
Success Indicators: Participants will be able to identify the birds of MMS and the surrounding community and develop and update the MMS Checklist of Birds. In a natural setting the group will observe the interaction of particular ecosystems and their related widlife species. Non club participants will be able to enjoy the birds on campus as well!
