2005-2006 School Year
The third year of the state budget crisis and declining enrollment.
We need your help, NOW! Why?
Two years ago, the state budget crisis forced our District to make cuts of $3.7M. The state budget crisis is still not over, and we, as concerned parents who support important programs for our children, must continue to raise the funds to provide the instrumental music program, and to keep our libraries and computer labs open in our schools for the 2005-2006 school year. MEF, Music in Moreland (MiM), School Site Councils, and Home & School Clubs have been financially supporting these programs for the past two years through fundraisers and donation drives.
The suggested tax-deductible donations to keep these programs funded are:
Music fundraising this year has been very successful, so we are only asking for $375/music student. The actual cost is $500/music student.
No amounts are too small or too large. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted for all three programs. Please mark the program(s) that you wish to support on your remittance envelope, and mail your donation by May 15. Checks should be made payable to MEF . Double your donation: please check to see if your employer participates in a matching donation program, and mail the form with your donation.
Total needed for the 2005-2006 school year:
- $196,000 Libraries (6 hours/day at all 8 schools)
- $130,000 Instrumental Music (bands & orchestras)
- $ 94,000 Computer Labs (3 hours/day at all elementary schools)
- $420,000 Total Funding required to provide these programs
MEF will continue to accept all donations for all programs throughout the year, so you can donate even if you miss the May 15 deadline. However, funds collected by May 15 are for next school year, and will help to retain our current music teachers, and directly affect the number of hours each school library can be open.
For more details about this donation drive, or to find out more about MEF and MiM, visit our great new website: www.MEFHome.org, email MEF@Moreland.k12.ca.us, or call MEF at 408-874-2977.
Thank you for your continued support! Our district's 4300+ students thank you!
If every Moreland family would contribute $150 for libraries and computer labs , we would have complete library and computer lab programs at all schools.
If every Moreland music family would contribute $375 per child in music, we would have a complete 4th - 8th grade music program. (This assumes that the district would continue to fund one-half of the music program ($133,000), as they have in the past two years.)
Please make your tax-deductible donation to MEF today. Don't forget to designate Library, Music, Computer Lab, or General (where needed most) in the memo section of your check. Remittance envelopes are available in all school offices. Donations can be mailed to:

2004-2005 School Year
The second year of the state budget crisis and declining enrollment. Donations to MEF were down this year. The library specialists were funded 1/2 time (15 hours per week) with School Improvement Program (SIP) funds from the School Site Councils. MEF collected $13,100 for libraries and added $6,900 of general funds, to add 5 hours per week to each library specialist's schedule for the second part of the school year.
Music in Moreland and the district were able to fully fund the 4th - 8th grade music program for the school year, and the district hired two wonderful and energetic music directors for our elementary school music programs. The music program was complete this year, providing instrumental music programs to 4th through 8th grades.
Enough funds were not raised to make a difference for the computer lab program, so those funds are being held for the computer lab program by MEF.
2003-2004 School Year
The state budget crisis and declining enrollment forced our school district to take drastic measures to balance our budget, which included the closing of a school, cutting back hours for janitorial, clerical, counseling, nursing, and secretarial staff, and cutting programs for libraries, computer labs, and music, among others.
MEF, MiM (Music in Moreland), and our community worked together to raise $40,000 to fund Library Specialists 1/2 time (15 hours per week), $30,000 for our computer labs, and $75,700 to fund the 5th and 6th grade music program. A total of $145,700 was raised, but, unfortunately, it was not enough to completely restore any of the three programs for the 2003-04 school year. Partial reinstatement of the music programs and Library Specialists was achieved.
